Are You Frustrated with Your Dog? You’re Missing the 4 Core Influences
Dog owners, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or outright frustrated with your dog’s training, the problem isn’t your dog—it’s likely that you are missing one of the four Core Influences that determine every successful outcome.
Many of us get stuck in the cycle of frustration when our dogs pull on the leash, ignore commands, or seem unable to focus when distractions are high. But as dog trainers, we know that success isn’t about finding the perfect tool; it’s about controlling the four foundational elements that shape your dog’s choices.
In the video above (4:08), I break down these four critical areas and explain how to apply them to your daily training routine to end the struggle forever.
The 4 Core Influences That Change Everything
For successful training, you need to be intentional about exerting influence on your dog. That influence comes from mastering these four components. If you only have control over one of these, you can only make so much progress. You need at least two, if not all four, for real mastery.
Here are the 4 Core Influences that every professional trainer uses:
Controlling the Dog (The Physical Boundary): This primarily means the leash and collar. This influence allows you to set clear physical boundaries and prevent your dog from practicing bad choices, giving you the immediate ability to get your dog out of situations you don’t want them in.
Controlling the Environment (The Setup): Why is your dog perfect at home but a chaotic mess outside? Because your home is a controlled environment! You must learn to strategically manage distractions in the environment to help your dog succeed and make better choices, rather than setting them up for failure.
Controlling the Reward (The Motivation): This isn’t just about food; it includes petting, praise, games, and access to life rewards. When you control the reward, you create the motivation for your dog to choose you over any competing distraction in the environment.
Controlling Your Mindset (The Trainer’s Strategy): This is arguably the most important influence. You must have the right mindset for how to use the other three elements to craft effective training scenarios. Frustration often comes when your mindset (and therefore your action) is not aligned with the results you want (as illustrated in the detailed leash pulling example in the video).
