What Can I Do About My Dog’s Separation Anxiety?

Separation anxiety can be tough, but you have to have a no nonsense approach to it.

The trigger for the anxiety is obviously the human leaving the room, but you have to be able to leave the room. So, what do you do?

The first thing I teach is place training. When training the place command, it is important to set boundaries and allow the dog to break the boundaries, so you can correct the dog.
You have to insist, that the dog stays on his place and is not allowed to come off. A dog that has been used to things being differently might take a little longer to learn this. In addition, make sure you reward heavily, when your dog stays on the bed.

Sometimes a dog may only have separation anxiety with one family member. In a case like that, the other family members need to stay in the room and teach the dog to stay on his place. It’s important, that the dog learns to listen to every person in the home and not select one person only.

With patience and repetitions, your dog will form the habit of going to his place, when he realizes that you are about to leave the room.
