The Power Of Interactive Play

The single most powerful reinforcer for your dog is interactive play.
It involves:
Stalking prey/toy (think panther),
Chasing (when your dog actively runs after prey/toy),
Pouncing (when your dog jumps up on a person or another dog),
Biting (think about squirrels, rabbits or a ball),
Shaking the prey (becoming possessive of the prey/toy),
Consuming.
Those are all ways your dog gets rewarded through play.
This type of interaction releases adrenaline into your dog’s bloodstream. If you are trying to create a calm dog, the play is not going to give you the ability to calm your dog at that moment.
However, the play will bring a dog’s energy levels down gradually. After vigorous play, your dog can practice being calm and controlled.
