My Dog Is Very Timid. What Can I Do?

Dogs are timid for different reasons. A lot of people think, dogs are timid, because something happened to them, prior to arriving at their home. I don’t disagree with that, but I think, sometimes genetics are at play. It is not necessarily a bad thing for a dog to be a little timid around humans. Whether it is genetics or the environment, the good news is, you can do something about it.

One thing that doesn’t work is, petting your dog, when he/she is afraid. It is more beneficial to teach your dog some basic skills, like stay, walk with you and come when called. In your life and your dog’s life, those three skills are going to be needed the most. The place/stay is one of the skills, that you teach and then generalize in different situations. First, you teach your dog to stay in the living room or the kitchen and then you take that skill outside your home, for example a hotel.

Teach yourself not to pet your insecure dog. There is a difference between holding your dog and petting your dog. Holding your dog can actually be beneficial and have a calming effect.
