Have you ever come home to find that your dog has eaten the couch cushion, gnawed on the leg of the kitchen table or chewed up you favorite pair of shoes? Most likely, the reason is boredom, but destructive behaviors can also be a sign of anxiety.
It is important to remember, that your dog only knows what you have taught him/her. That includes the behaviors you don’t want.
If your dog isn’t getting into trouble when you are home, then you can begin to trust him/her, when you are walking out the door. Initially, I would not leave for more than maybe five minutes and gradually increase that time. Upon return, I would observe if the dog behaved or not. When I return and the dog has done something bad, he/she can’t get in trouble. It just means, that the dog doesn’t understand that my home is a place of calm and that he/she has to control himself/herself.
Many dog owners want to give too much freedom too fast. That can overwhelm a dog and you’re not doing him/her any favors by just letting them have the run of the house.
It’s up to you to teach your dog how to gradually learn to be responsible. I can help you get there.
