How To Get Your Puppy To Go To Sleep At Night

You need to wear your puppy out. That does not mean, that you take your six month old puppy on a two mile run. If that is you, please stop it!
You need to find ways to physically and mentally wear your dog out, if you want them to sleep all night.
When we get a puppy, from about 8 weeks to about 8 months, I will get up at night and take them outside to use the restroom. Those first few months, I really show them a lot of grace.
However, I do need to sleep, I have to work the next day and perform, just like our clients do with their jobs.
I set myself up for success, by working my dogs’ minds and bodies in appropriate ways a few hours prior to bedtime. In order to avoid potty accidents at night, you might need to stop feeding your dog by 6pm and stop giving water by 7pm. You might think, that this is a long time for the dog to go without food and water, but it’s really not that big a deal.

For my adult dogs, late feedings work well and put them to sleep. That may not be a solution for everyone, but it works for us.
