Be careful with your voice

How do I calm my dog down quickly?
Let me share my number one secret: I don’t talk.
When dogs are excited and people feed into this with a lot of excited talk, it will just escalate the dog’s behavior. I see it over and over and it is almost comical. I certainly don’t mean to be judgmental, because I used to do the same thing.
Then I learned how powerful the voice is and how equally powerful silence can be.
When you have an untrained dog, who has no idea what you are saying, it can become very frustrating for both sides. You repeat your words over and over, maybe your tone changes, you become louder and more impatient, while your dog isn’t even looking at you and is distracted by all the noise.
So next time you want to calm down your excited dog, give the “silent treatment” a try.
